Vince Staples - "Señorita" | Directed by Ian Pons Jewell

Note from Ian: This was all due to Nabil. He repped me for a bit when I was between companies. I got so many tracks from him, loads of single bids. He would be the one telling me to just write a paragraph and no treatment, it was a great year in videos then, even if I only did that one. Seeing so much music with good budgets that he had a direct line to. He got the Vince Staples track in and I sent a paragraph idea, then changed it once I got notes back.

I loved the track of course, and could see some of the scenes immediately like the tattooed bible holder character walking down the street with a following that are picked off by gunfire one by one. I then developed it from this, sitting and writing it out. I also worked with Dobi Manolova on collaborating on the character ideas. She also did the treatment design and images for it too. But importantly, she was the one that researched and found these historical stories about human zoos that existed. The fictional idea I was writing wasn't even totally fiction in the end.

Once we got into it, Vince and his manager were very trusting throughout and had no real edit notes at all. It was very smooth.

In general, I don't really take to notes as everything is pre-planned and locked down, so I ensure this is understood from the start. I now also have it in my contract if I do a music video that the treatment is the creative base to which nothing can be added (by them) unless it's discussed. I hope to be able to come back soon with some contract updates for everyone to check out and discuss as I think it's the one place we can protect ourselves somewhat from the crazy process that can happen in videos.
